- Suggested process is to give feedback on this page for Possible Talks. If there is "enough" interest, the presenter should move a talk to the "for sure" section and update the times.

- = Target Audience / Marketing Pitch =
-
- The target audience of the Lucene track are current and potential users of the various Lucene subprojects. Mostly these users are developers in other downstream or in-house projects.
-
- Initial marketing pitch (feel free to improve):
-
- Apache Lucene is a robust and powerful, open source, search library that powers search and discovery in thousands of websites and applications ranging from large corporations like Apple Computer and CNET to startups creating next generation intelligent applications.
-
- Over the years, Lucene has grown beyond just a pure Java library into a complete ecosystem of tools designed to help developers and businesses solve critical information access problems. Whether it’s leveraging the power and simplicity of Apache Solr’s search and faceting capabilities or the large scale crawling features of Nutch, chances are Lucene has a solution to meet your needs. Moreover, with the recent additions of Apache Tika (content extraction), Apache Mahout (machine learning) and Apache Droids (crawling framework), as well as ports of Lucene to languages like C, Python and .NET, it has never been easier to build search capabilities into any application, no matter the scale.
-
- The Lucene Track at ApacheCon will feature a full slate of training, talks and networking on the entire Lucene ecosystem. Talks will cover both the technical details and the business aspects of Lucene. Networking events will help connect you with the creators of Lucene and other users.

-
- * Lucene Basics (Michael Busch or others?)
- * Intro to Solr (????: Hoss out of the box talk?)
- * FWIW: I've given OOTB twice before, and it's always been ''really'' rushed in the 50 minute block. In an ideal world it could be broken out into a ~40 minute overview of all the features solr provides "Out Of The Box" and then another ~40 live demo of using Solr OOTB to index and make sense of an arbitrary data set. --Hoss
- * Intro to Nutch and/or Nutch Vertical Search (Andrzej Bialecki) (when was the last time we had a Nutch talk? ''probably never...'')
- * Mime Magic with Apache Tika (Jukka Zitting)
- * Recommendations using Lucene (Ted Dunning, see abstract below, possibly tag team with Grant on his Intelligent search talk) - 1 hour

- == Building Intelligent Search Apps w/ the Lucene Ecosystem ==
-
- Apache Lucene has evolved in recent years beyond a core search library into a top level project containing a whole suite of tools for working with content. Starting with Solr, which builds on the core Lucene search library, we can add in tools like Tika, Mahout, Droids and other open source libraries to build intelligent search applications. This talk will focus on how to leverage the various components of the Lucene Ecosystem to build out intelligent search applications that better enable users to find what they are looking for in today's sea of content.
-
- == Building Recommendation Systems with Lucene ==
-
- Recommendation systems don't have to involve much new code. Instead, you can build advanced recommendation systems using Lucene and some pre-processing. This talk will provide specific examples of how logs of behavior can be processed to produce real-time recommendations using Lucene for the heavy lifting.
-
- == Solr Flair: User Interfaces powered by Apache Solr ==
- Come see Solr in a new light, with snazzy innovative user interfaces. We'll talk about Solr's flexible capabilities for driving custom user interfaces and how projects like SolrJS and "Solritas" bring Solr to the front-end. We'll experience user interfaces in a variety of front-end technologies, including PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java, Velocity, JQuery, and SIMILE Timeline. We'll have Ajax, clouds, maps, timelines, and set visualizations, oh my!
-
- == Realtime Search in Lucene ==
-
- What is near realtime search in Lucene? How can it be used to enhance your existing search applications? What are the limitations? We'll go over how NRT is implemented, use cases for how/when to use it and when not to, how to do replication with NRT.
