HSSF-Excel question about dropdowns

In Excel if you want to protect a cell and allow the value to be only one 
among a specified set of values (sort of like an enum).

Now, if I have a dropdown in Excel for that cell, which references cells on 
another sheet (which contain the list of possible values) -- on trying to 
read such a file I get an exception.

any ideas on how to get this to work ?
