Maybe we should consider using the Maven Wrapper to control the version of Maven that is used?  That would allow us to avoid this kind of problem in the future, upgrading (or rolling back) the Wrapper in a controlled way.  The builds could be updated to use that so that they would be upgraded as we move forward.
