Re: Questions about licensing the FOP hyphenations
Hello Alex
I'm ccing fop-dev so this will get archived.

Didn't see anything. I think if you are not subscribed your mails are
blocked (spam protection).

No. The restriction about commercial use basically rules ru.xml out.
Also, the LPPL demands a restriction the Apache license cannot fulfill.
See: http://nagoya.apache.org/wiki/apachewiki.cgi?Licensing

No. To be able to apply the Apache license to your file we would need
permission (signed grant statement submitted to the Apache Software
Foundation) from all mentioned authors of the original file.

Such things are problematic. You don't know exactly what happened with
those files, how they came to be.
> d) Whether the email message with attached file (to fop mailing list,
> or somewhere else) is enough to establish my grant?
No. And unfortunately, your grant is not good enough because your file
is a derived work. The original author still have rights on your derived
file.
This is all so complicated and frustrating but we simply cannot just
ignore any copyright claims on the files. If only one of the original
authors cannot be reached and cannot be convinced to submit a grant, we
can't do anything. The best would be if someone built a new file from
scratch.
I'm sorry for the negative message. But thanks for speaking up.
If only the TeX hyphenation pattern library weren't such a mess from the
legal aspect.

Look at the code which handles "words" for hyphenation: it
just takes everything between spaces, including all punctuation.
After this, quotes and apostrophes are handled separately, IIRC
there is also some limited handling for dashes. All other
punctuation is not handled properly.
The hyphenator OTOH has a bunch off character classes (from the
hyphenation files. The hyphenation patterns are intended to
handle words consisting of characters from the classes.
I'm not quite sure of the consequences. One is probably a
waste of performance: the hyphenator also gets passed
strings like (10000.000E-300$+(488&45$)*=234 whether it likes
it or not. I also fear the current handling may screw the
push character count conditions (e.g. if several punctuation
characters follow the word), although I don't remember
complaints.
In general I feel the current handling does not generalize
well for languages with non-ASCII scripts and for non-ASCII
punctuation.
There's also the problem of character normalization. The
hyphenator may know how to hyphenate "Gerät" but probably
can't handle "Gerät". I'm not sure how well users are
aware of this requirement. Maybe FOP should be configurable
to normalize itself if requested and icu4j is available.

Depending on what definition of "word" is being used, the trunk code's
FOText.isWordChar() might be helpful. It was an important part of the
text-transform work.

I'm working on this already.
There is another interesting problem: we should ask the hyphenator
to tell whether a character is a word character (for hyphenation)
rather than doing this in an ad-hoc fashion.

You can't have a "dynamic fo:table-header".

You can't use a fo:retrieve-marker in a fo:table-header. Read
the spec or a good book.

This means: you've botched the marker definitions as well. Read
the spec or a good book.
It would help if you described your original problem in an
undersandable way. Get the help of someone who speaks english
well, or a professional translation service if necessary.

How can I get dynamic fo:table-header in the same page sequence
Posted by Selber Jean-François <jf...@oxymel.com>.
How can I obtain a dynamic fo:table-header in the same page sequence?
I try with <fo:marker> :
I try to set a marker, I use this marker in fo:table-header and modify
this marker after the first header display,
but I have no results. See below the displayed message:
[ERROR] fo:marker must be an initial child,and 'marker-class-name' must be
unique for same parent
<fo:page-sequence master-reference="*">
<fo:flow flow-name="xsl-region-body">
<fo:block font-family="sans-serif" font-size="9pt">
///////////// initialize the marker definition
<fo:marker marker-class-name="table-continued">
titre 1
</fo:marker>
<fo:table table-layout="fixed">
<fo:table-column column-width="180mm"/>
<fo:table-header>
<fo:table-row>
<fo:table-cell number-rows-spanned="1" number-columns-spanned="1">
<fo:block>
///////////// Use marker definition in header
<fo:retrieve-marker retrieve-class-name="table-continued"
retrieve-position="first-starting-within-page"
retrieve-boundary="page"/>
</fo:block>
</fo:table-cell>
</fo:table-row>
</fo:table-header>
<fo:table-body>
<fo:table-row>
<fo:table-cell number-rows-spanned="1" number-columns-spanned="1">

<fo:marker marker-class-name="table-continuedu">
titre 1 suite
</fo:marker>
<fo:table table-layout="fixed">
<fo:table-column column-width="180mm"/>
ect ect.....
This mecanism seems to be incorect. But how can I do??
I have to build a pdf document from a FO document by using FOP. This FO
document contains a large table which will be printed on several pages.
In order to repeat at the beginning of each page the semantic of the table
, I use the notion of header.
How is it possible to automatically differentiate the header of the first
page from the header of the next pages, by adding for example the string
"continued"
example:
The problem is the following one : I can only define one header for a table
Suppose that I have this header:
<fo:table-header>
<fo:table-row>
<fo:table-cell number-rows-spanned="1" number-columns-spanned="1">
<fo:block>
This is my title
</fo:block>
</fo:table-cell>
</fo:table-row>
</fo:table-header>
First page: This is my title
On the next pages I will have: This is my title (continued)
But I cannot build the corresponding header
<fo:table-header>
<fo:table-row>
<fo:table-cell number-rows-spanned="1" number-columns-spanned="1">
<fo:block>
This is my title (continued)
</fo:block>
</fo:table-cell>
</fo:table-row>
</fo:table-header>
Thank you and best regards

Well, there are a few things which can cause me ranting away
from time to time ("you" isn't specifically you in the following
text but more generically meant):
- Keeping wondering about something which doesn't work after
being told it wont work, ever.
This specifically applies to syntax errors in well documented
languages, like XSLFO.
- Describing a failed approach at solving a problem rather then
the problem itself.
- Obviously approaching the problem by copycatting whatever
random code was found on the net and a lot of guesswork.
Just guessing how things should work will get you stuck. Invest
in building a more solid base by working through a good book
or taking classes instead.
- Adding excuses about lack of english language skills. After all,
if your english is really that poor, it will be pretty obvious
to everyone.
Invest in getting help for formulating the message instead.
- Prepending statements about your newbiness, or lack of skills
in a certain technology or whatever. This will be pretty obvious
to anyone more advanced anyway.
- Prepending an excuse like "Sorry this has been probably asked
often...". Chances are you are right.
Invest in searching the FAQ and the list archives instead.
- Prepending excuses like "I'm not sure whether this is the right
place to ask...". If you feel the need to do so, the selected
list is almost certainly not the best place to ask.
Bluntly asking "what is the best place to ask on advice for the
following problem..." is less insulting. Better yet, invest more
time to find the right place to ask before posting.

For the benefit of non-francophones, the above French means:
Yes, it's very simple. It's enough to say, politely:
"Sir, please have the kindness to send this type of message to the FOP
users list, because we are simple developers and do not know how our
product works."
Jean-Francois,
Although Joerg's original reply was perhaps a bit harsh, please do not
say "Ok thanks a lot for your answer" when clearly you do not mean it.
Glen's point is simply that this list is already overwhelmed with mails
about FOP development. The fop-user list exists to handle questions
from users of FOP; and many of the FOP developers also subscribe to that
list. If the questions from FOP users do not go to that list, it
becomes useless. At that point, those users who are interested in
questions and replies from other users must subscribe to the developers'
list, where there is all sorts of discussion that they do not understand
or care about. So, the list is simply asking you to respect the scopes
of the mailing lists and ask your question in a more appropriate forum.
They are not singling you out: often users ask questions in the
development list, and are politely redirected to the fop-user list.
Thanks,
Eric

MArkers are only allowed in static content, of course.
The trick is to put the content in the static content for
the region-before rather than using table-header.

True, of course, it may be easier to find the OpenOffice dude/dudette
than it is to find the hyphenation pattern creator for Klingon ([OT]
look here: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/05/11/0235254). But
then again, it might still be easier to contact those good folks than
it's been to contact the TeX (or whatever) hyphenation pattern creator(s).
In any case, using the OpenOffice hyphenation patterns was only a small
part of my post.
The "meat" of it was really, why bother with the hyphenation stuff at
all? Why not simply put links to hyphenation patterns on the Resources
page (or some other appropriate page) and be done with it? Wouldn't it
be great not to have to worry about licensing & stuff? Of course, a
(rather large) part of me is glad you good folks are spending the time
to try and get these licenses & grants in order. Of course, I'm still
not playing with 0.20.5rc3. <not-a-rant-honest!>I'm trying hard (forgive
me if I'm not trying hard enough!) not to keep harping... Maybe I'll
finally just break down and do the CVS thing.</not-a-rant-honest!>

And then, there's the little problem of finding someone who's doing the

The short answer: It's Apache Policy.
The long answer: This was so decided after very, very, very long threads
on various mailing lists. I can't tell you the details off-hand but if
you're interested you can dig into the mailing list archives.

Probably. That's probably not going to get changed in the maintenance
branch, but will probably get fixed in the normal course of things with the
API changes coming in the trunk.

I *think* the way it is set up now will work fine. Part of what I am trying
to highlight is the massive *similarities* between the key-value entries,
which ought to reduce errors on another axis. I may be wrong. If so, we'll
change it later.

Sounds good. Moving hyphenation to its own page appears to be a step in
the right direction, and should make it easier for people who're
interested to find the information. Great work!

Fine with me, although since there're only 3 or 4 different
possibilities (I don't recall if there are others), it makes sense (to
me) to provide an example of each.
FWIW, the keys I am aware of are: baseDir, fontBaseDir, hyphenation-dir
(shouldn't that be 'hyphenationDir', 'hyphDir' or 'hyphBaseDir'?). The
fact that the latter is non-standard makes me think it would be better
to provide an example for each. In my view, the best way to minimize the
posting of FAQs to the list is to 'idiot-proof' (as much as possible)
the userconfig.xml file itself, by giving as many examples as relevant.
Practicing brevity in 'help' files may be counter-productive.

First, I apologize for being so slow. I have now done (in CVS) most of what
you have suggested here. Specifically, the configuration documentation now
shows all of the configuration options, with detail where necessary (we can
always add more later), and cross-references for items that are addressed in
other parts of the doc (like fonts, and now, hyphenation).

What I have done with this is to show in a general way how to set the
key-value items in the configuration. Since they are all the same, it
doesn't seem to make sense to document all of them.

using userconfig.xml
Posted by Clay Leeds <cl...@medata.com>.
I've moved this over to the fop-user list, as I think it's more
appropriate here...
Togan responded to my question about how to add hyphenation patterns to
FOP. I then asked:
>> Aside from HYPHENATION, FONTs & BASEDIR, how else can userconfig.xml

Well, to answer my own question (how else can userconfig.xml be
modified...), it appears that SVG can be modified (from the FOP/Graphics
page):
http://xml.apache.org/fop/graphics.html

> </entry>
BTW, I don't know what other options there are for modifying
userconfig.xml for improved/customized FOP output, but it looks like
this SVG entry might be better suited for display on the
FOP/Configuration page (http://xml.apache.org/fop/configuration.html)
(with a link from the FOP/Graphics.html#svg section:
http://xml.apache.org/fop/configuration.html
I guess the age old, should SVG-specific configuration information be
placed on the Configuration.html page (with a link to
configuration.html#svg), or on the Graphics page? The same would hold
true for FONTs...
I did a search of "entry key value" (without the quotes)
site:xml.apache.org, and only came up with SVG. I was shocked at not
finding a link to the configuration page, but alas that combination of
words are not on that page.
NOTE to Victor/DEV: although the information is in conf/userconfig.xml,
we might want to add an example XML entry showing how to add a
hyphenation pattern directory. Here's example copy:
To add the hyphenation directory (filled with all sorts of hyphenation
patterns such as the Klingon Hyphenation pattern) located at
/java/fop-0.20.4/hyph/, enter the following in the HYPHENATION section
of userconfig.xml:
<entry>
<key>hyphenation-dir</key>
<value>/java/fop-0.20.4/hyph</value>
</entry>
Have a nice day!

Suh-weet! Thanks! I'd forgotten about that!
BTW, I see that, aside from HYPHENATION and FONTS, BASEDIR is also
listed in the configuration file. However, it indicates "NOT
IMPLEMENTED" (which may simply be poor semantics). NOT IMPLEMENTED makes
me think the feature is currently not functioning.
1) Is the functionality for setting the basedir NOT IMPLEMENTED, or is
it "functioning" but merely is NOT ENABLED?
2) If it is functioning, why not uncomment the entry? As it's written,
it appears this entry would set it up to use the current directory
(which is the default anyway). Also, this would only be called if
userconfig.xml were called (it's only called w/ the arg -c).
Aside from HYPHENATION, FONTs & BASEDIR, how else can userconfig.xml be
used? Could it be used to specify/set the logger for command line
interface folks like myself?
Also, what is the purpose of commenting the following line?
<!-- <!DOCTYPE configuration SYSTEM "config.dtd"> -->
I see that config.dtd does exist in the same dir as userconfig.xml.
Thanks for pointing that out!

As far as I know this is still possible with the userconfig.xml no need
to compile the hyphenation pattern just add the necessary configuration
to the userconfig.xml and incorporate userconfig.xml into the config.xml
<!--

if you want to specify your own directory with hyphenation pattern

<!--

Pardon the newbie question, I know there's a very
simple answer to this--but why can't Apache FOP
distribute a Lesser GNU Public Licensed-product? I
believe an LGPL product (as opposed to GPL) does not
require that whatever it comes with it (i.e., the rest
of FOP) to fall under the GPL as well.
Thanks,
Glen

Along those lines... I too, would like to see FOP using OpenOffice hyph
patterns. In any case, is it possible to merely provide a URL to
hyphenation patterns on the Resources page? That way, anyone can
download the hyphenation patterns they need, instead of having pt, ru &
hu installed on systems which may never use them.
One potential problem I see with this is with binary distributions
(since hyphenation patterns appear to be "compiled" in FOP at the time
of build). However, perhaps one "new" additional (final?) feature in
0.20.5 could be support for a new "lib/hyphenation/" directory, for
hyphenation patterns, without the need for them to be compiled in the
FOP. Frankly, I'd prefer this solution anyway, so I'm not saddled with
unnecessary hyphenation patterns.

Because most "public domain" files...:
- are not marked as such
- have commercial-use restrictions
- may be implicitly LPPL licensed depending on their origin.
The only place where a valid candidate might be found is the original
TeX distribution as far as I know. If there's a clean public domain
version (clearly marked as such and without restrictions) I have nothing
against using it.
I still think it would be best if we found a way to use OpenOffice
hyphenation patterns (LGPL, so we can't distribute them but we may be
able to use them anyway).

I have asked a couple of times, and never received a satisfactory answer.
Why go back to scratch? Why not go back to the public domain version?
