As pointed out in [phoenix#131](https://github.com/forcedotcom/phoenix/pull/131), BaseRegionObserver#preCompactScannerOpen returns null by default, which hoses any coprocessors down the line, making override of this method mandatory. The fix is trivial, patch coming momentarily.
