[Issue 127270] New: Emulated bolding ("singular" font) with color gives outline effect

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127270

          Issue ID: 127270
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Emulated bolding ("singular" font) with color gives
                    outline effect
           Product: General
           Version: 4.1.3
          Hardware: All
                OS: Mac OS X, all
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: ui
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: keme6206@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

When using a font that does not have separate typeface files for bold face,
bolding is emulated. It looks like this is done by superimposing a "fat
contour" line on the existing typeface.

On the Mac OS-X build of 4.1.3, the bolding contour is always black. When
bolding colored text, the visual effect is "outline with fill color". White
text on black background comes out as "skeleton" (skinny characters) when
bolding is applied.

The problem does not occur on Windows builds of 4.1.3. I have not tested it on
other platforms.

The problem has been observed on OS-X versions 10.8 and 10.12. Other apps can
apply bolding as expected on the same systems.

Workaround is to install the boldface font file when it exists. Secondary
workaround is to use a replacement font. (Preferences - OpenOffice - Fonts)

Screenshot - only plain "Geneva" font file installed

Note the formatting of the word "Bold", in particular at the end of the second
line and beginning the last line of text.

No it is not. (That one was also reported by me. I see now that I have
registered twice, using different mail addresses. Minor slip...)

127248 is an issue with text alignment on block aligned paragraphs.
This issue, 127270, is with rendering (specifically, coloration) of
"autogenerated bold" characters.

As I see it, it is only conceivable (i.e. not highly probable) that the two
issues have a common root somewhere in character handling. The reported issues
(coloration vs. positioning) are fundamentally different, so I can't see any
reason why they should be marked as duplicates at the outset.

Writer document to demonstrate bug with bolding

The document demonstrates the issue by using the "Geneva" font, which by
default is only installed with one font file for the basic typeface. If "Geneva
Bold" font file is installed, the issue will not show.

Issue will resurface if you uninstall the Geneva Bold font file, or for the
"Geneva lines" you can use a font which lacks explicit bold font files on your
system.

Screenshot after installing "Geneva Bold"

Bolded green is now all green, and bolded white on black appears as bold text
rather than a "font skeleton".
