Can't run the agila-web application

Hi All,
I'm trying to run the agila-web on my server (tomcat5.5, JDK 1.5, W2K3
server).
I completed all the steps in the AgilaBpelInstallationGuide and then tried
to access the web site using credentials: admin/admin and nothing happened.
In the tomcat log file I discovered the problem:
 *2005-08-16 14:10:48,930 ERROR Thread-1
org.apache.agila.bpel.engine.common.persistence.DBSessionManager - Could not
initialize or configure the persistence factory.
net.sf.hibernate.HibernateException: JDBC Driver class not found:
org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver...*

I'm using hsqldb 1.80 and the file in the tomcat's common/lib is:
hsqldb.jarwhich contains the class
org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver, so I have a few questions:

   1. Should I use the hsqldb version 1.7.2 driver (instead of 1.80) ?
   2. How the hsqldb runs the database (what server mode is used) :
memory only, In-process, servlet or web server? Does the command line maven
hsql:start is all that required to run the server? and how do I make sure
that the server is running correctly? I tried to access the server using
HSQL Database manager but I could connect to it only using standalone mode.

Hi,

I think Philipp's problem was just related to the HSQL version. For
some reason it didn't work properly with HSQL 1.8.x but 1.7.2.2 seems
to work find. Do you confirm Philipp ?

Cheers,

Matthieu.

Yes that's exactly what I did. My setup is tomcat 5.0.28,
jdk 1.4.2_08 and Windows XP and HSQL 1.7.2.2 located shared/lib and
common/lib.

Just to clarify: did you run maven hsql:start, and then start tomcat
after deploying agila-web?

AFAIK when you run maven hsql:start it starts the hsqldb in server
mode, that means it runs in it's own process independant from tomcat.

I tried the HSQL database manager with type "HSQL Database Engine
Server" but it gives metadata errors . The same i get in the tomcat
logfile:
2005-08-23 12:09:48,074 WARN main net.sf.hibernate.cfg.SettingsFactory
- Could not obtain connection metadata
java.sql.SQLException: java.lang.InterruptedException
	at java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method)

Ideas anyone?

Hi Matthieu,
 Thanks for the detailed answers.
I'll start with the data modeling then I'll review the architectural
documentation.

Aren't the Agila PBEL and the Agila BPM should be integrated in the same
engine?

Eventually, a business process contains activities performed by users and
groups and other activities performed by web services and other components.

When a business analyst tries to model a business process, he does not
distinguishes between the two types of activities and usually model them in
the same process.

Hi Motty,

Sorry for the late reply, I forgot that some of your questions were
left unanswered.

As Philipp pointed out the HSQL server is started when you run 'maven
hsql:start'. Then Agila BPEL connects to the server as any JDBC
client. So HSQL isn't running im-process.

If I remember well, the data must be stored in agila.script. HSQL just
"replays" all the scripts when it starts.

There's nothing about the database schema specifically. If you're
willing to contribute some documentation about it, that could be very
helpful to others. You may have to look at Hibernate's mapping files
and persistent classes though. Don't hesitate to ask if you need any
information or pointers about these.

There's the architecture documentation still on Twister. I didn't have
enough time to move it to the Agila BPEL wiki yet but I'll try to do
it soon. Meanwhile you can find it here:
http://smartcomps.org/confluence/display/twister/Architecture+Guide.
It's not completely finished yet but has some basic information.

By WfMC standard, do you mean XPDL or the Reference Model? For the
Reference Model it's actually only a very high level architecture
model and Agila BPEL follows it. As for supporting both XPDL and BPEL,
the two specs cover a different scope. The first is dealing with
workflow as the second is really adapted to web service orchestration.
I believe XPDL would be more in the scope of Agila BPM.

Hi,
I don't think that Tomcat 5.0.x and Tomcat 5.5.x has major differences in
their configuration that might affect the way the engine loads the common
libraries.
Are you using the last version of HSQLDB (1.8)? in this case the
hsqldb.jarcontains the jdbc driver and it's the one I'm placing in the
common
directory.
Besides, It is still hard for me to understand how the database engine is
working.
I've read that this DB has several modes of operation. I want to now how the
database service (daemon) is started (is it when I'm running the command:
maven hsql:start, or is it running in-process whithin the tomcat server or
in memory?) and how can I connect to the database using HSQL database
manager to examine the schema.
I looked at the database files (at ..\Agila\trunk\modules\bpel\dist\etc\hsql
directory) and I can't figure out where is the actual data is stored. All I
can see there are 4 files: agila.lck, agila.log, agila.properties and
agila.script.
Some other issues not related to my problem:

   1. Is there any documentation about the schema? If not, I think it is
a good idea to create a model of the database schema and document the
purpose and structure of each table. I'm willing to do so if I can find some
   resources about it.
   2. Is there any model of the architecture or the components?
   (likewise).
   3. Does the workflow schema supports BPEL specifications only? Is
there any support for other workflow standard (like WFMC)? I think that a
good workflow engine should support boath BPEL and WFMC standard (maybe by
extending the BPEL schema) since BPEL is not human centric and lacks the
specifications of how a workflow task is handled by an individual and group
of people and the algorithm used to route the task between people (manually,
load balance, voting, first-taker, re-assign etc.).

Would you try with Tomcat 5.0.x ? I've never had such a problem with
it and it could come from configuration differences between the two
versions.

Hi,
I've tried both options (to place hsqldb.jar in the common/lib and in the
shared/lib directories) and got the same error.

Did you properly placed hsqldb.jar in the common/lib directory of
tomcat? Which version of Tomcat are you using? Did you try to place
the jar in the shared/lib directory as well (I'm not sure that Tomcat
4.1 manages its classloaders in the same way as 5.x)?

I used both 1.7.2 and 1.8 with no success.

Ideas anyone?
