[Call for testing] Linux icons 128x128

Hi all,

With r1837621 I could finally enable higher resolution icons (128x128)
for Linux.
I can confirm they are visible on Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04.

Please test on any Distribution you can. ;-)

Regards,

   Matthias

I already explained that to you some time ago?
But I admit, that it can be confusing. ;-)

Hi all,

I would like to discuss the possibility of enabling these Linux icons in
AOO 4.1.6.
Tests were positive so far and the optical enhancement is really noticeable.

What do you think?

The new icons are looking perfect under Debian Stretch (9.5) x86 using build AOO420m1(Build:9800) - Rev. 1841506
2018-09-20_22:11:13-Rev.1841519

Maybe someone can also test it on KDE and on pure Debian?

@Peter:
What do you think as Release Manager of integrating these icons into 4.1.6?
The optical difference is remarkable...

Maybe these icons are in scalable vector format (SVG).
For the moment I can live with it and we can look into that for a later
release.

BTW: 4.1.6 does only have icons up to 48x48 at the moment. I tested with
4.2.0.

With the 4.1.6 build, I can't get the AOO icons in 128 size either. The other icons are correctly increased, including some non standard applications but not all of them (Gramps for example is not scaled).

No problem! I simply didn't think of that warning since I only got it
one time.
Otherwise I would have mentioned it.

I have now installed Xubuntu 18.04.1 in a VM and can confirm that the
icons look good with XFCE.
Nevertheless, I can't get them higher than 64x64 on the desktop. But
that is another issue and can be solved later...

Hi,

Thanks for the pointer. Sorry, I admit I don't read in detail all the messages from the list.
Rory has confirmed it works on XFCE, I use the same environment.

Thanks to Pedro, the comparison is crystal clear, that's much better.

You can overcome the error by executing
sudo dpkg -i openoffice-core01_4.2.0-1_amd64.deb after the error message

This is a regression in 4.2.0 so someone will have to worry about that when the project gets there (fortunately this does not affect the 4.1.x branch)

Meanwhile can you please change the bug status to confirmed and add some details on the OS where that occurred?
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127774

Thanks!

There was an error during the installation (Apache_OpenOffice_4.2.0_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US_2018-09-12_16_19_52_1840718.tar.gz)

belonging to openoffice-gnome-integration 4.1.6-1
Then in a terminal after soffice command: /opt/openoffice4/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libucbhelper4gcc3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Reverted to the 4.1.6 build that was installed (4.1.6-9790)...

Yes, there are a lot of bugs to be fixed, who wants to begin?! ;-)

It is definitely a bug to have those icons in source for over 6 years
and not to install them.
*That* bug was fixed...

I leave it to others to decide, I can only make an offer...

we should always think about why we do this release: It's not a bigger
one but just a small bugfix release. IMHO then we should focus on the
real bugs. We have enough which can and should be fixed.

So, even when the icons look better, it's not a bug how they look like
now. When others want to have them included in 4.1.6 then OK. But I
wouldn't vote with a clear +1.

I can confirm it now with Xubuntu in a VM.
Thanks for testing!

Yes, they look so much better! I could test them on Ubuntu 16.04 (Unity)
and 18.04 (Gnome).

I am pretty sure that they will also look nice on other desktop
environments, but this is a point where the community can help...

To be clear:
These icons were in our code since around 2012. But they never got
copied over by the desktop integration.
I only added two icons (printer admin and extension) and patched the script.

Please do include this in version 4.1.6 for Linux!

For those who aren't convinced it makes a real difference, please go to

https://imgur.com/a/5WoOqub

or download these two separate images and compare them side by side

AOO 4.1.5
https://i.imgur.com/P29Aoi6.jpg

AOO 4.2.0

(Unfortunately Imgur converts everything to jpg but the difference is still obvious even with jpg compression artifacts)

Hi all,

I called for testing two month ago... :-0

*If* enough people test it, we would have a chance to include it in 4.1.6.

So if you are still interested in having nice icons in the next release,
please download a build from here:
https://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/linux64/
https://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/linux32/

Test it on every Linux desktop manager you can get your hands on! ;-)
And *please* give feedback!

Regards,
   Matthias

To be clear: This was about "big" icons in trunk.

They are *not* in 4.1.6.

Is there a download URL for a linux 64 (deb) 4.1.6 build? I'm using OO every day for writing/editing and would willingly give it a road test.

Just to give an example, I changed the icon for Writer manually to
128x128 on my Ubuntu 16.04 and this is how it looks in Ubuntu Software
compared to the others:

https://home.apache.org/~mseidel/AOO%20Icons%2048x48%20vs%20128x128.png

It looks like the new icons are installed in the right area. If I had run
the desktop-integration, I'm sure I would have seen them.

I am not sure if it would be visible on Freedesktop, but on Gnome
(Ubuntu 18.04) and Unity (Ubuntu 16.04) it makes quite a difference...

Hello Matthias--

I should have replied to this ages ago. The last build I did was against Rev: 1838339 so this would have included your changes. I don't see any difference in the printer icons, but...I typicall install the Freedesktop desktop interface on rpm build, AND, I don't normally do this during test builds, just starting from the binary instead. The reason is I don't want my production version to get accidentally trampled.

At this point, I seem to have the old icons available because I did't do a new desktop installation. Sorry...

There are builds in ARC format available from our buildbots:
https://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/linux64/
https://ci.apache.org/projects/openoffice/install/linux32/

Hope that helps?

first I need my laptop to work again. Seems a repair is necessary.

Do you have a build that doesn't need to be installed? Just unzipp to
get started? Then I could try it on my daily system.

Thanks
