[VOTE] Apache Nutch 1.1 Release Candidate #1

Hi Folks,

I have posted a candidate for the Apache Nutch 1.1 release. The source code
is at:

http://people.apache.org/~mattmann/apache-nutch-1.1/rc1/

See the included CHANGES.txt file for details on release contents and latest
changes. The release was made using the Nutch release process, documented on
the Wiki here:

http://bit.ly/d5ugid

A Nutch 1.1 tag is at:

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/nutch/tags/1.1/

Please vote on releasing these packages as Apache Nutch 1.1. The vote is
open for the next 72 hours. Only votes from Lucene PMC are binding, but
everyone is welcome to check the release candidate and voice their approval
or disapproval. The vote passes if at least three binding +1 votes are cast.

[ ] +1 Release the packages as Apache Nutch 1.1.

[ ] -1 Do not release the packages because...

Thanks!

Cheers,
Chris

Correct. I'm simply pointing out that we should make it clear that you
need an active net connection if you want to build Nutch, because it
will download some dependencies.

Great, thank you for taking the lead with this process!

Hi Andrzej,

Sure, I'm just trying to address Sami's comments. I think in the past we used to include a binary in the Nutch release too, but this time I just created a source tarball and zip. I think it's better because it cuts down on the size of the release, and more consistent with other projects that just release source.

As for the tutorial, I'm happy to update it to add e.g., the few lines that say OK now you have to build Nutch from source instead of just getting the huge hunkin' release. I don't expect it to be a huge update which is why I didn't raise a big objection (and I don't think you are either if I'm reading it correctly).

I'm happy to cut another release with these minor updates (to the tutorial and including Sami's commit that added license headers to like 5 of the files that were missing them) -- however I don't think we should let this drag on for a long time. In the interest of getting out a 1.1, I'll try and push out rc2 today and if folks have time (especially those like you and Sami that voted) it would be great to get a check of the rc within the next few days or so if possible so that I can push this forward.

I appreciate the help!

Cheers,
Chris

I don't recall discussing this here ... I'm ot against, but the
instructions should be clear, and if ant downloads stuff then an active
Internet connection is a requirement too.

Saw that, thanks. I can cut a new RC later today with your updates.

Yeah I was thinking since we primarily do that on Tika and there has been
back and forth a while on the _size_ of the Nutch release, we might as well
just release source and have someone run ant job or something. How do I
update the tutorial? Just the stuff in xdocs?

I can update the tutorial as part of the new RC and throw it up later today.

WDYT?

Chris

I did not yet have time to functionally review the package but I
spotted couple of things:

-I ran rat (this should really be integrated to the build) and fixed
few java source files that were lacking license headers.
-Is the intent now to release just a source package? If so I think the
tutorial should be updated to reflect that change.

Hi,

This is a VOTE thread. Please do not post your user question on this thread as we are VOTE'ing on a particular release.

You can re-post a new thread with your question, and I would highly encourage it.

Thanks!

Chris

So, +1 from me, not that I'm even sure I get a vote in the matter, but if
