Which OS would you choose given a free choice
Hi guys
I'm getting a new server and was planning on going with Fedora Core 3
and plesk. But it was just suggested that I maybe consider FreeBSD and
DA. Never even heard of DA (about to look it up) but being a Mac user
I must know a little about FreeBSD.
So if you had a free choice of OS and control panel what would you go
with and why.
I need speed, reliability and the perl I'm doing does max my CPU (it's
evil code). Security is of course an issue, Normal web master worries
really.
If it's OK I'll republish this discussion on my server when it's up. I
know this must go through other peoples minds from time to time.
The only thing I won't consider is Microsoft but I doubt many in this
community are that way inclined ;)

I'm going to have to chime in after all my FreeBSD post :)
FreeBSD:
1. PORTS SYSTEM
2. 5.3+ has much better threading model
3. OS X applications tend to lag slighly behind
particularly perl and autotools
4. apache.org is running FreeBSD
5. bigger user commnunity
6. I know that all of perl,httpd,apr,apr-util,apr-iconv,mp2 compile and
run on it
7. libapreq2 is 90% there
8. I despise the bastardized etc system of Mac OS X.
Don't get me wrong, I own a mac(g4) too:)
9. The intergrated build enivorment is the best I've seen.
[thats probably personal opinion]
10. Directory structure
11. Disk Slicing
I'm sure I could think of more......

We're in the process of moving all of our web stuff to FreeBSD as well.

FreeBSD is fast, clean, and well-supported. Best server OS I've used.

FreeBSD hands down. Stability, security, and speed. The new Linux kernel is supposed to be faster by some tricks or some such, but I have not had good luck with stability and Linux especially under heavy load. I prefer the FreeBSD philosophy as well. Linux is, by its very nature, chaos incarnate.

OSX mmm yum ;p never heard of DA (may be an indication to stay away ;p)
Plesk is very difficult to admin and not very intuitive, that is why all
of our users that had free trials of Plesk and cPanel went with cPanel
except one guy who stopped doing his website altogether...

FreeBSD for security and reliability and cPanel for both reasons *and*
its the industry leader with the most features and best support and ease
of use. http://cpanel.net/ has a list of features for both the admin and
user parts of it.

I'd go with whatever the person who is supposed to admin the box knows
best.
