access request attribute directly in vm using struts2

Hi,all
   I am new baby to struts2 and velocity. Recently I use them do dev web application.In an vm,I could only access request attribute like this,$request.getAttribute("proDefid") .Could I access like this, $proDefid.Is I missing something.Is it need some config? Thanks  a lot.
