[Bug 120309] New: writer fails to recognize/open docx file if filename has .doc extension (warning loops)

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=120309

          Priority: P3
            Bug ID: 120309
          Assignee: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
Summary: writer fails to recognize/open docx file if filename
                    has .doc extension (warning loops)
          Severity: normal
        Issue Type: DEFECT
    Classification: Application
                OS: All
          Reporter: drankinatty@suddenlinkmail.com
          Hardware: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: AOO 3.4.0
         Component: open-import
           Product: word processor

Created attachment 78681
  --> https://issues.apache.org/ooo/attachment.cgi?id=78681&action=edit
contains docx-warning.jpg docx-warning2.jpg PERINNIAL.doc

When opening a MS docx file with a '.doc' extension AOO 3.4 writer displays a
warning that the file is corrupt and cannot be opened and asks to repair the
file. (see docx-warning.jpg included in attachment) If you choose 'NO', writer
then says that the document could not be repaired and cannot be opened. (see
docx-warning2.jpg) (you should also delete 'therefore' from the warning -- it
is superfulous) The file PERINNIAL.doc is also included in the attachment.

However, instead of closing the file-open dialog and returning to the blank
document, writer then immediately displays docx-warning.jpg again, followed by
docx-warning2.jpg. It then loops another time with docx-warning.jpg followed by
docx-warning2.jpg. At this point, I was considering manually killing the writer
process from the command line. But, I kept cycling through the dialogs choosing
'NO" each time when offered to repair, then suddenly, the document just opened
in writer. There is a bug in the way writer handles docx files with a .doc
extension.

writer - Expected Behavior

(1) it should be able to determine it is actually a .docx file even though the
extension is .doc. It should then handle the .docx file properly

(2) if the user chooses 'NO' when prompted to repair, then writer should quit
trying to repair the document and simply display the blank 'new document' page.

writer does correctly handle the file if the file is renamed from .doc to .docx

I have also managed to replicate this bug. I am using Windows 7, OpenOffice
3.4.1, revision 1372282.

Steps and observations:
1. I attempted to open the .doc file in OpenOffice, but encountered the
mentioned error message. When I tried to "Yes" to the query to fix the
document, I got the message "Read Error. Error reading file.".

2. So, I tried selecting "No" to fixing the document. The message, "The file
"resume.doc" could not be repaired and therefore cannot be opened.".

3. I clicked "Ok" and was returned to the first error message.

4. I clicked "No", then "Ok" (creating a seeming loop), three more times, then
after clicking the last "Ok", the document suddenly opened. The name clearly
stated at the top of the document was Resume.doc - OpenOffice.org Writer.

I agree that the handling of this error is incorrect for the following reasons:
1. The document, it seems could be opened (despite being told it could not).

2. Selecting "Yes" to fixing the document resulted in being told that it could
not be read, which caused the program to cease opening the document. However,
selecting "No" would cause the error messages to loop back to the main error,
which is strange if there is seemingly no way to open the document (an error is
given whether you press "Yes" or "No").

3. There is the obvious issue that the program will open after clicking "'No'
then 'Ok'" 4 times (I have opened the file this way many times and this appears
to be the magic number).

Replicated the bug successfully under the following environment:
Operating System: Mac OS X
Version:10.8.1
Build: 12B19
Open Office Version: 3.4.1

Steps followed to replicate the bug:
1. Open the perennial.doc with Open Office Writer.
2. It gives a warning message similar to "docx-warning.jpg" found in the
attachement. Click on 'No'
3. On clicking 'No', warning message similar to "docx-warning2.jpg" found in
the attachment is thrown.Click on 'Ok'
4. The warning message "docx-warning.jpg" is displayed again, continue clicking
No and Ok, after a certain time Writer opens up the document.

As in the previous comment renaming the document to '.docx' instead of '.doc'
solved the problem.
The user should not be given the same warning multiple times and Writer should
close the document once the user clicks on 'No' the first time itself.

Successfully replicated the bug using the following environment:
OS: Windows XP
Tool: OpenOffice
Version: 3.4.1
Build: 1372282

Here are the steps that were followed to replicate the bug:
(1) Open the Perennial.doc (attached to the bug report) using OpenOffice
Writer.
(2) The warning message shown in docx-warning.jpg gets displayed. Click on
"No".
(3) The warning message shown in docx-warning2.jpg gets displayed. Click on
"Ok".
(4) The warning message shown in docx-warning.jpg gets displayed again.
Continue clicking "No" and "Ok" for docx-warning.jpg and docx-warning2.jpg
respectively. Repeat this 8 times. After the eighth time, the OpenOffice Writer
opens up the document.

To verify the reporter's comment, the document was renamed to .docx (instead of
.doc) and doing this resolved the warning message problem.
It is important to fix the bug because the user should not be taken through a
loop of multiple warning messages. If there is a real incompatibility issue
between .doc and .docx, the user should be shown the option to repair the
document only once. If the user clicks "No", the document should not be opened.

Successfully reproduced this bug under Windows Vista using A00341m1 build 9593
- Revision 1372282 . Performed the following steps to reproduce:

1.) Generate a .docx file using MS Word 2010 that contains dummy text (in this
case, "test"), and rename the extension to .doc
2.) From the File -> open dialog in openoffice writer, open the renamed docx
file. Writer displays a modal dialog expressing that the file is corrupt and
offers to repair the file.
3.) Click "no", and a new modal dialog appears reporting that the file could
not be repaired.
4.) Click "OK", and the modal dialog from step 2 appears again. The loop
occurred 4 times, and then writer proceeded to open the file normally, as
described in the original post.
