multiple database instances

I apologize if this is a user question.  I've searched the dev list and 
didn't see reference to this.  I'm wondering about the thread safety of 
Xindice 1.1.  Can I safely have different servlets each with their own 
Database instance, in different threads, accessing the a given 
"database"?  Or must the web app developer handle synchronization of calls 
to a single database instance?
