Batik Rasterizer
Hi,
I have generated A4 format pages using Batik and Fop. Is it possible to
generate A3 format pages ?

Are you producing PDF output from FOP (using Batik input)? If so, I'd love a
pointer on how to do this.
Ideally, I'd like to get vector graphics in the PDF, instead of a rasterized
image. Presumably this would allow scaling of the PDF document without losing
image quality.
Thanks,
Dave

Hello Annick,
Here is how things work.
If you have the following image:
(myImage.svg)
<svg width="4.5in" height="5in" viewBox="0 0 450 500">
...
</svg>
and you want to rasterizer this, you have several options.
a. Modifying the resolution.
If you set the -dpi option, you change the convertion ratio from in to
user space units (px) which will yield an image with 'more pixels'. For
example:
svgrasterizer -dpi 300 -m image/tiff myImage.svg
will create a 300 dpi TIFF image.
b. Modifying the size of the image
If you set the -w (and or -h) options, you change the size of the
viewport into which the image is drawn. So, for example, if you set w to
450, your image will now be 450 pixels wide.
svgrasterizer -w 450 myImage.svg
will produce a PNG image (the default) which is 450x500.
I hope this clarifies the parameters. Note that -w and -h are unitless
and correspond to pixel values.
Vincent.

Hello,
Are height and width expressed in pixels, dots , mm or inches ?
My experience is that rasterizing a svg expressed in cm does not work,
expressed in pixels works, but I can' t control the size.
I read somewhere that FOP actual implementation was limited to 72 dpi (to be
fixed).
It seems also that the pixelsToMm options which is documented in the source
is not available externally and would, I guess, allow to express the svg
size in mm.

Hello Annick,
Then, I think you should raise this issue on the fop mailing list as
they would be the ones to tell how this could be changed in FOP.

Re: Batik Rasterizer

Hello Annick,
There are many more options in the rasterizer, see:
http://xml.apache.org/batik/svgrasterizer.html
In particular, there are -w and -h options to set the width and height
of the document. Used in combination with the -dpi, that should give you
a page the size you want at the resolution you want.
Vincent.

My problem is that I use the binary distribution with the command
java -jar batik-rasterizer ...
I don't know where to place options because I can't see the boundary between
batik and fop processing. The only option I have played with is :
-dpi
which is documented as set to 72
There are options width and length, but I don't know whether they are
relative to the input, the batik viewport, the fop document , the final
document or whatever

Yes, just define appropriate measurements for the page master.
I don't understand what is exactly the problem?

Hello Annick,
Answering from a Batik point of view, you can rasterize an image to any
size you'd like, so A3 should not be a problem. I do not know the answer
from the FOP angle though. I would assume you can, but somebody
knowledgable in FOP could give you a definite answer.
Vincent.
