   Thanks for fixing this long-standing bug!  I'm in favor of merging it as soon as responsibly possible.  It is clearly a bug, but it's also such a long-standing one that merging it before a major release is likely to break someone, somewhere.  So as much as I'd love to see this merged into the 3.x branch, and I think a strong case can be made for that, the responsible thing is probably to merge it whenever 4.x lands.  Whatever workarounds people have been using since 1.x can continue to work until 4.x lands, I suppose.
