[DISCUSS] KIP-1370: Include Instance and Rack IDs in kafka-streams-groups.sh Member Output

Hello Kafka Community,

I would like to start a discussion on KIP-1370, which proposes including
Streams group member instance IDs and rack IDs in the output of
kafka-streams-groups.sh.

- KIP: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/x/44CWGg

The Streams group description already provides the optional instance ID and
rack ID of each member, but these fields are not currently displayed by
kafka-streams-groups.sh --describe --members.
This KIP proposes displaying INSTANCE-ID whenever --members is specified.
RACK-ID will additionally be displayed when --members and --verbose are
specified together.

The goal is to make static membership and rack-aware assignment issues
easier to diagnose using the command-line tool. No Admin API, protocol, or
command-line option changes are required.

Looking forward to the community's feedback.

Best regards,
Sanghyeok An.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for taking the time to review this KIP!

AS1.
That makes sense. I've updated the KIP to use GROUP-INSTANCE-ID as the
column header and
to display the column only when at least one group member has a non-empty
instance ID, consistent with kafka-consumer-group.sh

When you get a chance, Please take another look!

Best regards,
Sanghyeok An.

Hi,
Thanks for the KIP. It generally makes sense to me and looks like a useful improvement. I can see us following this pattern in a future KIP for share groups too. Just one comment.

AS1: I suggest following kafka-consumer-groups.sh for the group instance id behaviour. This uses "GROUP-INSTANCE-ID" as the column header, and it displays it conditionally depending upon whether the group members have any group instance id information.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hello Kafka Community,

I would like to gently follow up on the discussion for KIP-1370, in case
anyone has had a chance to take a look.
This KIP proposes exposing Streams group member instance IDs and rack IDs
in kafka-streams-groups.sh, making it easier to diagnose static membership
and rack-aware assignment issues using the command-line tool.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback, comments, or suggestions you may
have.

Best regards,
Sanghyeok An.
