RE: cvs commit: jakarta-turbine-stratum/src/aspect Trace.ajShowSlow.aj JCSTrace.aj GetTiming.aj
I'm not changing the build yet. I'm building aspect through jbuilder.
It has a nice plugin for aspectj that you can compile through. I build
dirty with ant afterwards. A special build in ant would be nice. I
think you did this elsewhere.
I don't think we should have any aspectj files with a .java extension.
This could make things very messy. I'm sticking the .aj format.
I'm just playing around with this. The timing is pretty nice though. I
can set a thresh hold and only get printouts for methods that take
longer than that.
It has some nice development uses, but I don't think I'd ever try to use
it in production if I didn't have to. The code base can get too
confusing. If you have an exception in an aspect modified class, you
have to check the line number in the aspect generated source code and
then decide whether you should go to the aspect files or the java source
. . . Though, it might be useful for making large source code changes
to existing systems. . . .
I'm very new to this.

I don't think it's a problem, I have a separate src/aspects directory in
Turbine and it's not causing a problem. I can introduce the same structure
into Stratum later if we want.

Cool :-)

The aspectj guys have a core IDE interface that makes available debugging
utilities that make finding errors easy. It also makes navigating the
classes that have been affected by aspects. There is support for emacs,
jbuilder, netbeans and they are working on eclipse. There is also a
stand-alone browsing tool. They don't expect you to look at the generated
code :-)
