Due to a problem with Bugzilla [1], this was not forwarded to the list.
Here's my response to the poster:

Well, our project here project is called "Apache XML Graphics". "Commons"
is a subproject, like FOP and Batik. Since there are other "Commons"
(Jakarta Commons, WS-Commons, XML Commons etc.) at Apache we need to
give it a unique name and that incidentally has "XML" in it. Batik and
FOP are very much about XML. XML Graphics Commons happens to have just
one component (XMP) which deals with XML.

I personally think the name is ok. Changing the name will also produce quite
some unattractive work. You can try to convince everyone that a different name
is necessary. But please do this on general@xmlgraphics.apache.org, not in Bugzilla.

Consider the functionality: PDF, RDF, Graphics2D, PNG, TIFF, and so on. All good
stuff to be sure, but all stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with XML. Why
then is it called "XMLGraphics"? Because the two specific projects that spawned
this library use it to do XMLish things like SVG and XSL-FO, which is also fine;
but this library itself is not about XML and shouldn't be called XML graphics.

I'm not sure what it shoudl be called: maybe just Apache Graphics Commons? Or
perhaps  Apache Graphics Formats? However, it's really not about XML at all.
