I'm not sure what you're saying here. POI only supports microsoft office
file formats, eg .xls. It does not support the openoffice formats, never
has done.

You'll want to save your file as a .xls, then open that in openoffice if
required. That should work just fine

That's normal. All three jars contain different things. poi-3.1 contains
the main, stable bit of poi. poi-contrib-3.1 is user contributed classes
and helpers. poi-scratchpad-3.1 is the new areas of poi that are not yet
complete/stable, eg powerpoint

Many Thanks Nick..

Today i downloaded the files.

poi-3.1-FINAL-20080629
poi-contrib-3.1-FINAL-20080629
poi-scratchpad-3.1-FINAL-20080629

I have one doubt. The second jar file has contrib\metrics classes. But the
first jar doesnt have.
The third one also like that..

My doubt is should i build all to one jar.

How could i do it. can u please tell me

Many thanks in advance

Hmm, no, it does:
   unzip -l poi-3.1-FINAL.jar | grep HSSFPatriarch
     5360 06-29-08 16:43 org/apache/poi/hssf/usermodel/HSSFPatriarch.class

I'd check you really have the version of poi on your classpath you think
you have. See the first FAQ entry:
