User and Group API access

Hi,

I'm using CMIS 0.13 with Alfresco.

Is there an API for looking up a user and the groups they belong to?  I see
the Principal info tied to ACLs, but I'm looking for a way to, given a user
name, look up that user's properties, including what groups they belong to.
