Thanks all for your input. I have commit {{r1773407}} which 
* Remove support for configuring a custom user when accessing the repository. 
* Use the {{sling-i18n}} service user when accesing the repository 
* Grant {{sling-i18n}} service user {{jcr:read}} access on {{/}}
