OT: database table construction

I just got "Practical mod_perl", and've been going through it. I also got
"MySQL"by DuBois. Both of these books talk about speed and efficiency, but
neither of them talk about designing the actual database tables to maximize
speed. I have some rudimentary understanding, but I'm looking for more. Are
there any books or URLs that folks would recommend?
