I am wondering whether this would be considered to break backwards
compatibility or just considered a bug fix :)

Personally I think that an explicit log4j warning "unknown level, using DEBUG"
would be ok in the log4j messages which must be enabled first, but also that it
should be possible to enable the debug messages from within the configuration
file.

Thoughts?
