Unless you set vmlauncher to false, that is.

If you use Ant 1.6beta, it would work if you set the resolveExecutable
attribute to true as well.

No, see above.  It is even listed as one of the reasons to set
vmlauncher to false in <exec>'s manual page - and has been the reason to
introduce the new attribute in 1.6.
