AFAICS this issue does not affect released versions of 1.4.x. OAK-5071 introduced the async mode with 1.4.10 but it was disabled by default. The current 1.4 branch for the upcoming 1.4.11 release however has async mode enabled by default and therefore I backported this fix to 1.4: http://svn.apache.org/r1771860
