Create Guest network for a user

Hello everyone

1. Is it possible could create and assign a guest network to a specific
user without knowing his / her password via cloudmonkey?

2. Is it possible to create a global guest network, that will be available
to all users?

So each new account will be able to see that network?

Hi Ron,

Thanks For your updates...

Actually for the Cloudstack POC ,i have the following :-

1. One Cloudstack Mgmt server and one Xenserver host.
2. I want to use advanced zone without any NAT service,as i don't have NAT
enabled at my switch and router.

I want to achieve the same :-

Please advise me on the following :-

1. On my host the WAN on eth0 and LAN on eth1,so should i have to trunk the
NICS or using VLAN under cloudstack will solve the problem ??

2. I have created one physical network with (management, public, guest and
storage) in advanced zone in CS.

3. As per Network I want to achieve the following,i have 2 Nics only on
(Mgmt and HV host),one has WAN connectivity and one has LAN connectivity :-

*1. Management Network :- 202.0.0.0/28 untagged.*
*2. Public :- 172.235.0.0/28 (**Should be Passthrough host eth0**)
          VLAN :- 20*
*3. Guest VM Public :- **172.235.0.0/28 (Should be Passthrough host eth0)
  VLAN:-20*
*4. Guest VM Private :- 10.0.1.0/23 (**Should be Passthrough host eth1**)
      VLAN:- 50*
*5. Storage :- 10.10.0.0/22 (**Should be Passthrough host eth1**)
           VLAN:- 60*
*
*
*Also want to use Openvswitch to manage the above Network....*
*
*
Please suggest me how i can archive this...

Thanks,
Punit Dambiwal

The installation documentation is wrong in some places, confusing in
others and missing critical information.
I got blocked and will look for alternatives while the docs get fixed.
There is not much point for me to waste time with something that does
not work.
In the areas that are wrong, there is very little discussion about what
the actual goal of the section is so it is hard to know what to try to
get past the point where things collapse.

The state of the docs seems to be the root of a lot of problems that
people have with Cloudstack as evidenced by the questions in the forum.

Re: Create Guest network for a user

Posted by Ashutosh Narayan <aa...@gmail.com>.
Hi Ron,

I too have the same issue. When I create a private and public bridges,
I loose network connectivity. Libvirtd and KVM is installed on management
server.
I have installed CS 4.1 on CentOS 6.3 (x86_84)

Thank you,

Re: Create Guest network for a user

Posted by Ron Wheeler <rw...@artifact-software.com>.
That does not work.

"Make sure you have an alternative way like IPMI or ILO to reach the
machine in case you made a configuration error and the network stops
functioning!" should say that "If you follow these instructions you will
lose network connectivity"

It seems that no one who knows the system actually checks the
installation instructions.

This section needs some work to get in into a working state.
Cloudstack does not work according to the specs as documented in the
installation.

Re: Create Guest network for a user

Posted by Punit Dambiwal <hy...@gmail.com>.
Hi Geoff,

Thanks For your reply....as i have just *trunked* the host NICS as per the
cloudstack guide (
8.1.7.2.1. Configure in RHEL or CentOS)...the difference is now i am using
Xenserver instead of KVM...

Please advise me on the following :-

1. On my host the WAN on eth0 and LAN on eth1,so should i have to trunk the
NICS or using VLAN under cloudstack will solve the problem ??

2. I want to achieve the following :-

*1. Management Network :- 202.0.0.0/28 untagged.*
*2. Public :- 172.235.0.0/28 (On host eth0)*
*3. Guest Public :- **172.235.0.0/28 (On host eth0)*
*4. Guest Private :- 10.0.1.0/23 (on host eth1)*
*5. Storage :- 10.10.0.0/22 (On host eth1)*

RE: Create Guest network for a user

Posted by Geoff Higginbottom <ge...@shapeblue.com>.
Hi Punit,

You should not be trying to create networks manually in the Host, as CloudStack will assign a VLAN ID when it creates the Network/VMs, so doing it in the Host manually is going to cause you problems.

For Shared Networks you always have to specify the VLAN and IP Ranges when you create the Network as Shared Network Service Offerings mandate this.

RE: Create Guest network for a user

Posted by Geoff Higginbottom <ge...@shapeblue.com>.
Hi Dean,

Sorry for causing confusion, in order to create a Shared Network available to all users, simply create a new Guest Network by going to

Infrastructure > Zones > Your Zone Name > Physical Network > Your Network Name (the one with Guest Traffic) > Guest - Configure > Network Tab > Add Guest Network

Then create a new Shared Network and leave the 'Scope' at the default of 'All' this, as the name implies, makes it available to All users of this Zone.

Dean, replies inline. Let me take a crack at this, just from reading the docs, although I might be off base (anyone: please correct me if so).

Maybe either our docs have the info you need...or else you have discovered a need for doc enhancement.

Thank you, forgive my horrible spelling, as I have sent that email from my phone and stupid keyboard has auto correct enabled, which apparently messed things up.

As for the "global network" I went to service offerings and I found an option to create a shared network as you mentioned,

(JT) Do you mean as described here: [1]
>> "4. Click Add Network Offering.
5. In the dialog, make the following choices:
...
Guest Type. Choose whether the guest network is isolated or shared."

but I couldn't find any
option to make it public.

(JT) That might be available through some of the other choices in that same Add Network Offering dialog:

Supported Services. Select one or more of the possible network services.
...

System Offering. If the service provider for any of the services selected in Supported Services is a virtual router, the System Offering field appears. Choose the system service offering that you want virtual routers to use in this network....
For more information, see Section 8.2, "System Service Offerings".

Section 8.2 is here: [2]
It describes creating a new system service offering. There is a checkbox there for Public. In System VM Type in the same dialog, I assume you'd have to pick Virtual Router.

As for how/whether you can create a public (aka, available in all domains) network if you're not using the CloudStack virtual router...I'm not sure!
