Cocoon examples for generating HTML

I am a new user to Cocoon. I want to use Cocoon 1.7 for formatting XML, XSL
to HTML/PDF.
 Do I need to generate DOM first and then send it to
org.apache.cocoon.formatter class? 
Please let me know the steps for doing it or some link where I can find
Cocoon examples.
