& subString

Hi Guys...

Is there any way at the presentation level i can substring string values 
using the <bean:write> tag lib... i.e. if the string value is greater than 
20 chars then only show the first 20 chars... i could do this while 
constructing my VO but i was wondering if i could format it using this tag 
lib.
