ActionError strings from the code instead of properties?

Putting together my first Struts application. So far so good. 
I know in the ActionForms validate method when an error is detected you are
supposed to create an ActionError. The ActionError is passed a key that is
used in the ApplicationResource.properties file to look up the error string
text.
My problem is that I would like to pass the ActionError my own string passed
to me by a validation method in my Details object.
Is there any way that I can use ActionErrors and have the error string text
coming out of my code?
