You can use the Sybase version 10 open client to talk to microsoft SQL server.
I do it all the time. Microsoft even documents that it works, or rather they 
document
some cases of new/complex datatypes where it doesn't work.

But for vanilla stuff it works very well. Just about the only way to go from a 
unix
platform.
