Is this a log4j problem? Did you try if the same problem occurs when you perform the same test with a test program that writes to a {{new java.io.File("//L-Computer1/test/somefile.txt")}}? I think this may be an issue of Java on Windows...

Personally, I think it is a bit risky to have your failover appender pointed to a network path like {{//L-Computer1/test/logs/primary.log}}. Any network path is much more likely to fail than a local drive... An alternative may be the socket appender, but again, there is no guarantee that your backup appender is up when you need it...
