yup, just stumbled over the same thing.
but I think the problem is that item.getString() by default uses
the "platform's default encoding" (ie the one on the server), it should instead
get the request.getCharacterEncoding and use that encoding. If that is not
given, it might still fall back to the server-side encoding.
