I will try to find a relation to my crashes I observe. I definitively do no
intended edits with the foreground pictures (generally I have them on a locked
layer), but it might be that there are some strange interactions what also
cause this crash without editing the pictures.

Or I will have to submit a separate Bug for my problem when my investigations
will have found a different root.

common, I avoid that word because it can be confused with .bmp
