This fix causes the controller to always select the first item in a menu when reloading the page 
(without a specific menu item). This is breaking countless forms in my application.
Im really not sure why my portlet thinks its closed when its not.
I suspect that the root of the problem is when I select a menu option, that the pane is not correctly 
set to "open".
