On linux you could just start james as root and it will continue to run.
For automatic start on reboot (maybe depending on distribution), just
make a start-script for james in /etc/init.d, something like this:
#!/bin/sh
# Setup JAVA_HOME to your JDK home dir
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/java
export PHOENIX_JVM_OPTS="-server"
# See how we were called.
case "$1" in
  start)
        echo -n "Starting james: "
        startproc -n -12 -p /var/run/james.pid /www/james/bin/run.sh
        ;;
  stop)
        echo -n "Cannot stop james
yet"

;;
  restart)
        $0 stop
        sleep 2
        $0 start
        ;;
  *)
        echo "Usage: $0 {start|stop|restart}"
        exit 1
esac

Then you make a link to that, something like
ln -s /etc/init.d/james /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S30james

Be sure to check how your linux distribution does it, and change the
paths to where you installed james.
