cleanup strangeness

after a crash of the system whilest doing an update it does now, after rebooting:

$ svn cleanup
svn: XML data was not well-formed
svn: read_entries: XML parser failed (images/host).
svn: not well-formed (invalid token) at line 1

"host" is a directory. in this case there were no changes to working copy.
what are the strategies of resolving this? what would be the strategies if there would be changes
in working copy? if there is only one strategy, could this be done automatically by cleanup?
