My experience: I have compiled Xerces 2.3.0 and Xalan 1.6 on Redhat 8.0 using 
g++ 3.1 (as well as many other platforms/compilers) without any linking 
problems.

You are using the correct version of Xerces and it seems the build paths are 
correct.   Just to confirm (you mentioned you built Xerces using gcc), the 
Apache Xerces binary distribution for Linux was built using the Intel C++ 
compiler.
