I wonder if we could make this pluggable. There are other non-ASF options like Cloudflare's SSE optimized native gzip (https://github.com/cloudflare/zlib/tree/gcc.amd64)

We should also make use of native CRCings -- especially the 2.6 HDFS-6865 and ilk -- in hbase but that is another issue for now.
