Hmmm, it looks as though Bug 40312 is related.  A patch was proposed and
checked-in there which only addresses 1/2 the cases, although analyzing it
turned up problems with the patch here.  See my comments at
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=40312.

Note, however, that the documentation issue ("TRUSTED certificates can't be
used") was not addressed there.
