How to force tomcat to not write or load .ser files?

Is there a configuration somewhere that I can set to force tomcat to not
write or read .ser files (under work/).

Set an empty "pathname" in the <Manager> in the <Context>. (I haven't
tried this, but it's documented for 5.5 and 6.0.)
