log file permissions issue unix

How can I configure log4j to set the permissions for a new file?  When a
new log file is created it does so without group write permissions.
(-rw-r-r- instead of -rw-rw-r-). This causes a problem for the log files
shared between multiple account processes.  Any suggestions on how to do
this?  I am offsite and do not have my manual with me.  Thanks in
