Just as an interesting side-note, Dean and I both went to U Waterloo.

You have a point there.

I'm still not comfortable with having them directly in the docs. Here is
another proposal: There is a great need to have a "developer" site built
on httpd.apache.org. The dev.apache.org site needs to be retired, and the
httpd-specific information from this site moved to httpd.apache.org under
some directory like "developer". Why don't we make these papers the first
element under this new directory, perhaps in a "Contributed Papers"
directory, or something like that? That way, we make them permanently
available, but we don't distribute them with every copy of the docs.

There's one problem with that: they are student personal pages. The
university will be deleting them soon - at least one, probably two of the
students has already left, and two of the papers have disappeared without
trace.
I think, as long as it is made clear what we are mirroring, it is OK -
clearly mark them as "student papers written about Apache 1.3" or similar.

I'm not sure that I see the need for including them directly. It seems to
me that this type of material is more appropriately just linked-to. If we
put them in the docs, we take some responsibility for their accuracy in
the present and in the future, and I don't think we want to do that.
Just my opinion, of course.

Obviously we will need their permission before mirroring the pages. There
are a few other pages there on the same topic, as well as a bibliography
on Apache - assuming it's OK with the authors, I think I'll put the papers
and bibliography together into a section for inclusion on apache.org next
week??

Are they intended as developer tutorials, though?? I'd have thought
putting them as a "developer resource" on dev.apache.org would be better?

Will do, once I have permission from the authors!

I don't believe that we can include them directly in the docs.
The authors have (implicit) copyright on them.
Perhaps we should just add a section to the "tutorials" page
for developer tutorials. Alternatively, in the 2.0 case,
there is a separate developer page that we could link them from.
However, there really have been enough substantial changes in 2.0 over the
past year that I'm not sure how much of these apply anymore.
Regarding write access, you can send patches for the time being and
someone will commit them for you.
Joshua.

I've grabbed copies of all three, but don't have write access yet...
