I have imported the patches, but I don't have a compiler which demonstrates the problem so
I can't be sure that I got them all.

Regarding 64-bit atomic ops on non/old gcc systems:
We could import portions of libatomic_ops which fall under an MIT license.
If we want to do that, let's file a separate jira issue specifically to do that.

I tested the build on rehel4 64-bit after committing the additional patch. I get this errors from the compile, but the rest of it works now:

The diffs look OK (albeit, annoying, long term it'd be nice to get rid of all those double casts). I've reviewed the changes, and tested on FC9 and Ubuntu 8.10 (32-bit). I'll test on Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit in a few (installing).

With good license.
We can either require the boehmgc for these platforms or include the source.

There is no reason why you have to use the default gcc to build traffic
server for those platforms. Newer
version of gcc will still work on old versions of the OS. Is there any
problem with requiring newer gcc
package to compile the way we require other external libraries?

We still need a way to handle atomic operations for 64bit OSes that don't have a modern gcc.
We have the option of using the linux, glib, or apr atomic functions. However, I didn't see that any of them support 64bit atomic operations.
