[CFP and ANNOUNCE] Fall 2014 ATS Summit

Hi all,

we’re looking for topics and presentations for the Summit in a few weeks. We’re looking to fill two types of sessions for the two days:

Day 1: Presentation (plus QA) sessions

Day 2: Design / planning/ discussion sessions. A few topics of interest so far are QA / CI / testing, next generation cache tiers and config management.

Anything goes, so please post your proposals (or email me directly). Day 1 is pretty much wide open for any type of discussions, use cases, problem spaces, why ATS rocks (or sucks) etc. Day 2 is more for future design planning, but is also pretty flexible. Please submit proposals for both days asap!

The Wiki page is at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/TS/Fall+2014+Summit . For people without Wiki edit access, you can also email the information to me and I’ll add it. You can also request edit access from Miles Libbey (mlibbey@apache.org).

Cheers,

— Leif

Re: [CFP and ANNOUNCE] Fall 2014 ATS Summit

I'd like to propose two topics, if someone could talk about it, I would
really appreciate.

We've being using ATS for about 8 months, and we've had some core dumps,
which proved difficult to debug. Therefore, when I reported them to the
core devs, I couldn't go much further than printing the stack trace and
giving some background info about the request. So, I think it would be
useful if the core devs could show us how they do to debug issues on ATS,
and what info would help them finding the root causes, so maybe our future
reports would be more complete and helpful.

Also, first we thought we would just write plugins to ATS, but we found out
that some features were missing and some of the cores required us to "dive
into the core". However, the learning curve has been steep, so maybe a
session with an overview of the core's architecture and the decisions made
about code conventions, best practices, etc, would help us make better
contributions to the project.

I'm not sure this is the event's objective, if it's not, that's OK, but I
would certainly appreciate if someone could target these topics.

I know a few guys, including Bin Zeng have also requested that we discuss
TLS ticket rotation. This topic would likely need 20 to 30 minutes so it's
an ideal candidate for the second day.

Alan, I'd be happy to help with the How to Debug session, I have quite a
few tricks I can share. Also, I'm thinking about a session for APIs
including both C and C++, is this something people would be interested in?

Re: [CFP and ANNOUNCE] Fall 2014 ATS Summit

I have two talks I would like to present:

Hashing and Containers - current state and future direction of hashing, hash tables, and other containers.

With the arrival of the Concurrency Kit and work that Phil, Brian, and I have done on hashing, we need to be explicit about how to start using a fixed set of containers and phase out obsolete ones (particularly TCL). I will talk about what's in ATS now and how it is expected to be used.

Early Intervention - Getting hooked on acceptance.

As an outgrowth of Susan and James' work on SSL, we would like to provide a wider variety of hooks very early in the transaction. In effect this is a generalization of the SSL hooks. This is an design for future work, to set the style of how this should be done. I will discuss promoting the Accept objects to be API visible and go through the implementation details of the current protocol probing*.

* Note that because of Susan's work on the SSL tunneling feature, we can now protocol probe SSL ports as well.

If someone else hasn't already take charge, I can work or contribute to the "How to Debug" session.

Hi guys,

We're starting work on what we call our Edge PaaS based on ATS. Initially we're talking about RESTful services that configure ATS to do things like incremental upgrades (incrementally shifting traffic from old to new versions of a service with some sort of cookie-based hash so users don't randomly bounce back and forth across old and new versions of the system), bucket testing, purging cached entities, etc. We'd like to see this grown into a full-blown multi-tenanted system where different ATS plugins can be isolated from each other, introduce elasticity/a work conserving scheduler, etc.

This would not be a talk about ATS itself but rather about a system that uses ATS, so I'm not sure if it's appropriate for the summit. If it is please let me know, we'd be happy to present the design, consider taking on additional requirements, etc.

We do plan on open sourcing this system.

Vaporware alert: we're starting to write code this month.

Thanks,

Josh

Day 1 is pretty much wide open for any type of discussions, use cases, problem spaces, why ATS rocks (or sucks) etc. Day 2 is more for future design planning, but is also pretty flexible. Please submit proposals for both days asap!
