[jira] Created: (JAMES-889) Independent SMTP Product ...?

Independent SMTP Product ...?
-----------------------------

                 Key: JAMES-889
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-889
             Project: JAMES Server
          Issue Type: Wish
          Components: SMTPServer
    Affects Versions: Trunk
            Reporter: Robert Burrell Donkin

Support for the IMAP protocol has been factored out into a separate product with an independent release cycle. There is some support for an effort to do something similar with SMTP, though the idea is a little controversial.

This issues is intended to gather use cases, help to understand the problem domain, and generally brainstorm.

Markus Wiederkehr commented on JAMES-889:
-----------------------------------------

One use case would be an SMTP proxy that sits between an e-mail client and an actual SMTP server.

The proxy could intercept messages as they are sent to the server and scan and/or manipulate them. Scanning for viruses would be an example.
