[VOTE] 1.1 Release

All,

I have created what I hope is the final release of Geronimo 1.1. There has been a lot of work that
has gone into this release (please review the RELEASE-NOTES). Here are the final release candidates
for your review.

*DayTrader Application*
http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/daytrader-ear-1.1.ear

I'm working on a website and documentation to help folks out but the deliverable is the ear above.

*Geronimo 1.1 Version*

   *Source*
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-1.1_src.tar.gz
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-1.1_src.zip

   *Full J2EE Jetty Version*
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-jetty-j2ee-1.1.tar.gz
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-jetty-j2ee-1.1.zip

   *Minimal Jetty Version*
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-jetty-minimal-1.1.tar.gz
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-jetty-minimal-1.1.zip

   *Full Tomcat Version*
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-tomcat-j2ee-1.1.tar.gz
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-tomcat-j2ee-1.1.zip

   *Minimal Tomcat Version*
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-tomcat-minimal-1.1.tar.gz
     http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/geronimo-tomcat-minimal-1.1.zip

*Geronimo 1.1 Source Code*
   http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/org.apache.geronimo.specs.tar.gz
   http://people.apache.org/~hogstrom/1.1-final/org.apache.geronimo.specs.zip

Please remember that only PMC votes are binding but they will ultimately make their decision based
on your feedback.

Thanks to everyone who has spent long hours working on this.

A special thanks to Jencks, Sisson and Miller who spent long days working on getting the final
release right with License issues, last minute release note changes, etc.

I look forward to a positive outcome and a unanimous vote by Sunday. Assuming all goes well by
Sunday night I will propogate the jars to the mirrors on Sunday and declare the release official on
Tuesday.

Cross your fingers, grab your beverage of choice and let's close this release out.

Matt

Re: [VOTE] 1.1 Release

Do we need a new candidate and vote? This thread was started (with
binaries already posted) on Jun 15, 11:02 AM. But there have been
changes to the 1.1.0 branch as of Fri Jun 16 9:10 PM. I'm not sure we
should carry votes on the old binaries forward to the new binaries.

Thanks,
    Aaron

I'll remove the additional documentation link since the first documentation link takes them to the
project and additional documentation content.

I played around with j2ee-tomcat-server and came away with a good
first impression. I liked the 'usage' link on Database Pools and
Security Realms page. Here is my +1.

I did a sniff test of the installed product and I think we are good to go.

+1 from me.

I shall grill it some more tomorrow.

I'm planning to update the web site today so it will point to the new cwiki with the 1.0 and 1.1
(inprogress) documentation

"Additional Documentation" is using a redirect
(http://geronimo.apache.org/redirects/additionalDocumentation.html) to point to the Atlassian
confluence. Fixing this redirect is part of the web site update.

I just froze (for edit) the confluence installation at Atlassian so we will not have more adds there
(wanted or unwanted). I've been adding labels to some pages on that installation to point to the new
cwiki.apache.org/geronimo. As far as I know, we can not add an automatic redirect directly from a
confluence page.

Cheers!

Re: [VOTE] 1.1 Release

Some notes in relation to documentation:

* Clicking on the the "Geronimo Documentation" link on
http://myhost:8080/ takes me to
http://geronimo.apache.org/documentation.html which doesn't currently
have any 1.1 documentation. What are the plans for the 1.1 documentation?

* Clicking on the "Additional Documentation" link on http://myhost:8080/
takes me to
http://opensource.atlassian.com/confluence/oss/display/GERONIMO/Home
which contains a warning that the documentation has moved to
http://cwiki.apache.org/geronimo . Are we planning on changing this to
take users directly to http://cwiki.apache.org/geronimo ?

Other comments in-line below..

I'm still kicking the tires..

Darn! Well, I think that's a minor bug since activeio is not that
popular of a transport for activemq. I think is can be raised and
fixed in subsequent bugfix release. I don't think it's a show
stopper.

Re: [VOTE] 1.1 Release

Posted by Paul McMahan <pa...@gmail.com>.
I looked at the console using the jetty assembly on linux and the
tomcat assembly on windows. For the most part everything looks great
but I wanted to bring a couple of items to your attention:

* web access logs are enabled in the jetty distribution but not
enabled in the tomcat distribution. (The change recently made in
r412604 to reenable the tomcat access logs should have removed both of
the gbean elements that were added in r407646 instead of just the
one.)

* creating a new activeio listener from the JMS server portlet fails
with NoSuchMethodError because (I think) the version of activeio that
ActiveMQ was compiled against (2.2-SNAPSHOT) differs from the version
in Geronimo (2.0-r118). There's some discussion of this issue in
GERONIMO-1906.

Best wishes,
Paul

That's correct. The user reported that w/ an increased heap size,
they didn't encounter any problems. An uncaught RuntimeException/
Error thrown by a TimerTask will cause a Timer to be cancelled. We
should try to report these runtime errors. I think all of this
information has been recorded in the Jira for this issue...

I was the one who reported it.

It did turn out to be a memory issue that I was able to work around by
increasing the heap size (Thanks Kevan).

My understanding is that it turned out to be caused by an OOM error
and was fixed by starting geronimo with more memory. Certainly since
daytrader works we have some evidence that some db pools can be used :-)

I don't know -- it was reported to the mailing list but I don't know
what causes it or how often it happens. We may want to diagnose it
before making the decision on 1.1.

All but this last one seem documentable and livable till 1.1.1 comes
out. Does this last one mean that you can't get a DB connection from
a pool, or just that your logs will fill up with that message?

Re: [VOTE] 1.1 Release

OK, so I just want to recap some of the "known issues" that have come
up in the last few days, some of which have been diagnosed and some of
which have not yet:

 * WAR in an EAR cannot use a database pool by including a dependency
on it (the EAR must declare the dependency)

 * Manifest Class-Path for WAR in EAR was respected in 1.0, is ignored in 1.1

 * Cannot create an EJB reference to an EJB in another module

 * In-place deployment does not work for EJB modules

 * "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Timer already cancelled"
exception happens when acquiring a connection from a database pool

Thanks,
    Aaron

Re: [VOTE] 1.1 Release - Daytrader deployment questions

Posted by Matt Hogstrom <ma...@hogstrom.org>.
John,

My thinking was to release the daytrader-ear-1.1.ear into the repo as it is really the only part of
the application that requires versioning. However, your points below hilight that a quick 1.1.1 on
DayTrader with improved documentation is in order. I propose we release the ear now and fix up a
distributable package with the deployment descriptors for Geronimo, JBoss, etc. separately as a 1.1.1.

I'm so accustomed to using my own scripts and DDs I totally missed the issues you point out below.

Thanks.

Re: [VOTE] 1.1 Release - Daytrader deployment questions

Posted by John Sisson <jr...@gmail.com>.
Has anyone successfully deployed the DayTrader ear from the release
candidate?

If so, what are the steps to deploy?

I have tried deploying with only the ear and got the error below. I
also tried deploying the ear using the
daytrader\tags\1.1.0\plans\dayTrader-plan.xml file and also get a
similar error.

I also noticed that the geronimo\daytrader\tags\1.1.0\README
instructions seem out of date. E.G. talks about running createDB.bat or
createDB.sh.

Will DayTrader require files other than the ear to deploy? If so, how
will users get their hands on those files?

Is there a reason why we shouldn't have a src distribution for DayTrader.

I'll vote when I can see it working.

Thanks,

John
