Proposal for a brand new ManifoldCF website

Hi guys,

during the Open Source Summit Europe I received a lot of feedbacks related
to our website.

Taking a look at other Apache projects such as Spark[1] or OFBiz[2], it is
clear that ManifoldCF needs a restyling for its own website. I think that a
brand new website could help us for engaging more people in the community
as users and also contributors giving the right perception of a stable and
a working project.

I had the opportunity to work and talk with some Apache members[3] and
Sharan Foga from the OFBiz community proposed us to use the same website
template [4].
I know that it is a huge work but I think that if we try to follow some
existent project in terms of how expose contents, we can achieve this goal
in the right way without investing too much time.

What do you think about this?
Please let me know.

Thanks.

Cheers,
PJ

I notice that you created a branch off of the wrong source.

The ManifoldCF site is under
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/manifoldcf/site/trunk. Branches should be
under https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/manifoldcf/site/branches.

+1 from me.

Let's start from the website and then we will try to do the same for
documentation.

I'm going to create a dedicated branch for working on this.

Hi Piergiorgio,

I am very happy someone is looking into this!

I would suggest starting with the main site and not trying to do the
release documentation this way until we understand the tools.

Re: Proposal for a brand new ManifoldCF website

Posted by Piergiorgio Lucidi <pi...@apache.org>.
Hi,

I would like to continue this discussion and considering that we have a
huge interest on this side, I have just added a new issue on our JIRA
dedicated to arrange the work:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CONNECTORS-1495

Considering the Apache CloudStack template and using Jekyll with the
approach suggested by Muhammed, we only need to start doing something to
understand if it could be the right way to follow.

I hope to find some time the next week.
Please let me know if someone else can spend some time on this and when.

Remember that we also have a public HipChat room available here:
https://www.hipchat.com/gOSgu3lH8

Thank you all.

Cheers,
PJ

+1 to Jekyll

I would also take a look at "hugo"... very similar but easier to install
and configure (in my opinion).

I see only a major drawback in using a static site generator: they haven't
an embedded search engine (the only alternative I've found is lunr).

Re: Proposal for a brand new ManifoldCF website

+1 from me to adopt Jekyll, I agree with Muhammed

I think that in this way we could choose a very nice website template to
use.
We can also add a blog for publishing news about ManifoldCF releases and
community.

What about this process.

1) Find a modern new static site generator like Jekyll. [1]
2) Create a template
3) Start to use it in a specific path like
https://manifoldcf.apache.org/*new*
4) Migrate our Forrest xml's to Markdown (we can automate this somehow)
5) Start to serve our new site on root path

I think this would be great, if we could do it.
What technology should we pick? We use Apache Forrest, which has serious
limitations for formatting.

Hi Piergiorgio,

We certainly need a prettier website for ManifoldCF. UI is so important and
people creates their first impressions when they touch our website. I would
like to help such effort.

By the way, we can consider this template too: https://cloudstack.apache.org

Hi Piergiorgio.

I agree with you that a new captivating graphic design would be a big step
forward.

But in my opinion you should focus more on the usability of the site.
As a new user, I found a little difficult to retrieve some informations and
also the site requires too many "clicks" to get the useful contents.
