The most likely reason of hangs is call creating and accessing Swing Component not from Event Dispatch Thread (EDT).
The fix changes test superclass to SwingTestCase which makes sure all test-methods including setUp() and tearDown() are executed on the EDT.
There are some cosmetic changes in regards to generification which prevent compiler warnings.
