Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
        Key: MAVEN-1351
    Summary: maven prints exception but no useful information if maven.home.local is set to a directory that does not exist
       Type: Bug

     Status: Unassigned
   Priority: Major

 Original Estimate: Unknown
 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: maven
   Versions:
             1.0-rc4

   Assignee:
   Reporter: Patrick Moore

    Created: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 6:47 PM
    Updated: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 6:47 PM
Environment: Debian Linux (sarge release -- sorry if this isn't enough; I really don't know about linux versions)
JDK 1.4.2_02

Description:
In my ~/build.properties file I had an old directory set:
maven.home.local=/usr/local/maven-1.0-rc1

A simple enough error, but as can be seen the resulting error is incredibly useless. Since this is the type of error that a beginner would encounter, quickly frustrate and convince them not to use maven, I marked it as major. I should also add that 'maven --info' also has this same problem - which also adds to the frustration.

The error message:
~/projects/rbook$ maven -X
 __  __
|  \/  |__ _Apache__ ___
| |\/| / _` \ V / -_) ' \  ~ intelligent projects ~
|_|  |_\__,_|\_/\___|_||_|  v. 1.0-rc4

Initializing Plugins!
Set plugin source directory to /usr/local/maven-storage/plugin
Set unpacked plugin directory to /usr/local/mavenddd/cache
Set user plugin directory to /usr/local/mavenddd/plugins
Plugin cache will be regenerated
Now mapping cached plugins
Now loading uncached plugins
Locking /usr/local/mavenddd/cache/lock.cache
