User reports that he has narrowed this down to a specific key:

"when I use the numerical key for the zero on the rightside of the keyboard
this pop-up appears. when I use the numerical key for the zero on the upper
part of the keyboard this pop-up does not appear."

Could you check to see whether you have "Mouse Keys" enabled in Windows?

This is a mode where the numeric keypad can be used to control mouse motions.
In some versions the zero-key will generate a right mouse click.

The Windows 8 doc for this:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-xp/help/turn-on-mousekeys

Also, some mouse vendors have their own utility for setting this mode.

User Kees sent attachment,a screen shot in PDF format. It shows a pop-up of
the right-mouse context menu one would get when right-clicking in a cell.

>From the keyboard this menu could also come up when typing shift-F10, though
that is not a combination one easily does by accident. However, some laptops
have a dedicated key, often between the alt and ctrl buttons, for bringing up
this menu.

Is there any chance that you are accidentally hitting that key? This page
shows what it looks like:
